Bob Gibson, Hall of Fame pitcher who spent his entire 17 year career with the St. Louis Cardinals, passed away today of pancreatic cancer. He was 84.
Gibson, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, was signed by the Cardinals in 1957 out of Creighton University. He debuted in 1959, and had a breakout year in 1961, in which he established himself as a top of the rotation starter. From 1968-70 Gibson combined for 30.5 bWAR, winning the Cy Young Award and MVP Award in 1968, when he set a live ball record with a 1.
