In signing potential two-way performer Matt Davidson to a minor-league contract, the Texas Rangers have added a player who belongs to the same select group as Hall of Famer Babe Ruth.
Davidson and Ruth are among only five players who have hit at least 20 homers and pitched at least three innings in a season during the modern era, according to baseballreference.com. The others are Rocky Colavito with Cleveland in 1958, Dave Kingman with San Francisco in 1973 and Shoehei Ohtani with the Los Angeles Angels last season.
Ruth did it five times: 1919-21 and '30-33. With the Boston Red Sox in 1919, he hit 29 homers and pitched 133 1/3 innings.
