AUSTIN -- Freshman forward Jaxson Hayes is out for the Longhorns' first-round NIT matchup against South Dakota State as he's still being evaluated for a knee injury, Texas coach Shaka Smart told reporters Sunday night.
Hayes, who was recently named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, collided with a Kansas player late in the second half of Texas' 65-57 loss to the Jayhawks in Thursday night's Big 12 tournament quarterfinals in Kansas City. Hayes had to be helped off the court and was unable to put much pressure on his left leg.
Smart said Sunday night that Hayes had already received an MRI over the weekend and was expected to consult with a specialist on Monday.
