Hype machine: Longhorns' spring game tasted like vanilla, but a more exciting flavor could be in store

AUSTIN -- At halftime of its spring game, Texas reminded its fans about what happened about 3 1/2 months ago.

The departing seniors from that team gathered around the Allstate Sugar Bowl trophy on the video board. Yes, the win over Georgia, the one with quarterback Sam Ehlinger proclaiming afterward: "Longhorn Nation, we're baaaaaaack!"

On Saturday, battling blustery wind that made the passing game an ordeal, Texas closed down spring practice in front of about 35,000 who provided a decent atmosphere at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

The next time the Longhorns gather in August, it will be much more serious.
