Texas Coaching Rumors: Is Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy a Realistic Candidate?

With Alabama's Nick Saban out of the running, Texas has turned to the NFL in an attempt to find a marquee candidate to take over for Mack Brown as head coach of the Longhorns.

While several candidates (including Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin and San Francisco's Jim Harbaugh) have already declined through private channels, there are still several individuals who Texas is feeling out with regards to the vacant position in Austin.

One of those individuals is Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy, 82-44 in eight seasons in Green Bay, is rumored to be considering the Texas job, but all private indications have led us to believe McCarthy has virtually no interest in leaving Green Bay.

Why Texas Wants Him:

McCarthy is a Super Bowl winner with an exemplary record as an NFL head coach. Of all the candidates Texas is reportedly courting, McCarthy's resume might be the most impressive.

Why He'd Want Texas:

This is where things fall apart - sure, Texas can offer boatloads of money, but it isn't like the Packers are paying McCarthy poorly. There are reportedly a handful of NFL coaches open to settling down with a college program somewhere, but McCarthy is settled in the Green Bay area with five small children. Abandoning Green Bay with the team still in the playoff hunt makes virtually no sense, and the job likely won't be available anymore after Green Bay's playoff fate is settled.

Could It Happen?

Texas would have to write the mother of all checks and McCarthy would need to completely change his lifestyle and priorities. No matter how badly Texas wants McCarthy, we just can't see it.
