3 Takeaways From Texas Football Recruits At 'The Opening'

There isn't a bigger college football recruiting showcase than Nike's 'The Opening' and this year's edition featured several Texas Longhorns targets and commits. 'The Opening' finished its five-day event Sunday, and here are the biggest takeaways for Texas Football from the event.

QB Pledged Sam Ehlinger Enjoys Experience
The four-star QB has already committed to Texas and enjoyed his time going up against some of the best recruits in the country.

"It's been a great experience. I've never been around this many great athletes before," Ehlinger said. "It's been good getting to know all of them and competing against the best."

The QB led his team to a runner-up finish in the seven-on-seven drills. And like any good Texas commit, he spent some time talking up the Longhorns to some of the uncommitted recruits.

OT Xavier Newman Learned From Former NFL O-Lineman
Four-star OT Xavier Newman was the only other Texas commit at The Opening and he told Bleacher Report he learned plenty from the offensive line coaches, including former NFL center LeCharles Bentley.

"Learning from [Bentley] in the days I've been here, has really helped my game," Newman said. "We were learning, and we were going against the best in the country. There's nothing more you can really ask for."

Newman also spoke with several players about Texas, although he didn't name any names.

Texas Still In Mix For DT Marvin Wilson
Wilson is a five-star recruit and the No. 1 defensive tackle in the country. LSU has long been considered the favorite, but Texas is still in the mix. He's from Houston and was a fan of the Longhorns growing up.

"I've always loved Texas, especially in the Colt days," Wilson said, referring to QB Colt McCoy. "They've always had a special place in my heart. Coach Bedford has been recruiting me really hard."

Whether or not Texas can actually land Wilson remains to be seen. He's one of the most coveted recruits in the country and there's plenty of competition.

Bonus:
This doesn't relate to any potential players specifically, but Texas LB Malik Jefferson was a counselor at 'The Opening.' He was one the assisting athletes and surely spent time touting the Longhorns.
