Texas A&M football defensive coordinator Mike Elko should be seen as nothing else but a successful hire by Jimbo Fisher. Although Fisher’s first target was LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, which in turn allowed Aranda to get a raise to the highest paid coordinator in college football, Elko was hardly viewed as a consolation prize.
He is a bright defensive mind and turned around the Aggie defense with a focus on stopping the run. This was a thorn in our sides for years under Kevin Sumlin, even after he hired top defensive coordinator John Chavis. The supposed savior of our defense rarely turned in Top 50 units in his tenure and was correctly shown the door when Fisher took over.
