I don’t think you can overstate the importance of rivalries in sports. The prospect of winning and losing are equal parts of joy and fear. There are few things as satisfying as beating your rival in college football, and conversely there are few things as awful as losing. A ho hum crappy season can’t be washed away with a win over your hated rival, but it can provide a sense of relief that for the next 12 months, you don’t have to hear shit from that other fan base.
