Venus Williams Departs the French Open, Losing to Timea Bacsinszky

PARIS — Venus Williams lost in the fourth round of the French Open on Sunday to 30th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland, meaning that the tournament will produce a first-time Grand Slam champion.

Bacsinszky won, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, at Court Philippe Chatrier, beating Williams in the fourth round here for the second consecutive year.

Williams, who will turn 37 this month, was seeded 10th. She is a seven-time major champion, all of those titles coming at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open. Her best French Open showing was in 2002, when she lost to her sister Serena in the final.
