Tatjana Maria beats Jule Niemeier to reach first major semifinal at Wimbledon

In only the third all-German Grand Slam quarterfinal in the Open Era, world No.103 Tatjana Maria recovered from a set down to beat Jule Niemeier 4-6 6-2 7-5 and become the first women’s singles semifinalist at Wimbledon 2022.

The world No.97 Niemeier broke Maria’s serve in the opening games of both the first and second sets, but the outcomes were largely different. The 22-year-old Niemeier, playing only her second Grand Slam main draw, kept the early established lead in the first set, as Maria didn’t manage to earn a single break point, while in the second set the veteran won four consecutive games from 1-0 down and comfortably forced a deciding set.
