Ukrainian world No.5 Elina Svitolina recorded two victories over Top 4 players in one day at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, following up her quarterfinal win over Garbine Muguruza with a swift triumph over defending champion Simona Halep.
The fifth-seeded Svitolina conquered the second-seeded Halep unexpectedly quickly, in only 56 minutes, racing to 5-0 leads in both sets. In the first set Halep held serve in the sixth game for the first time, avoiding a bagel, while in the second set she broke her opponent for the first time in the sixth game, only to postpone the inevitable defeat, 6-1 6-1.
