PARIS — Despite consistent patches of rain interrupting play during the first week of the French Open, the tournament was able to proceed mostly on schedule. But that good fortune ran out on Monday when steady downpours forced tournament directors to cancel play.
The tournament, which is the only Grand Slam event without at least one showcourt with a roof, has already been a bit of a drip with the losses of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and the local favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on the men’s side, and Maria Sharapova, because of a positive drug test, on the women’s.
