Swiss world number five Stan Wawrinka was knocked out in the first round of the Aegon Championships, losing 6-2 7-6 (7-3) to Fernando Verdasco.

Wawrinka, 31, never looked comfortable on a greasy Queen's surface and struggled to cover the powerful forehand of his 32-year-old opponent.

Verdasco wrapped up the match - which was interrupted by rain - as Wawrinka's serve faltered during a tie-break.

Top seed Andy Murray's opener against Nicolas Mahut is now on court.
