Peter Max’s U.S. Open Image: Variation on a Classic Theme

When the artist Peter Max was asked to recapture the essence of Arthur Ashe Stadium, 20 years after he delivered a rendering for its debut, he quickly spotted a new test of his talent: how to convey the 2016 addition of a retractable roof.

For more than five decades, Max has produced uniquely expressionistic and colorful takes on subjects as varied as Muhammad Ali, John Lennon, John Glenn, Taylor Swift, the World Cup and the United States Open tennis tournament.

But it is not easy depicting a stadium in a way that enlivens posters, T-shirts, magnets, luggage tags, even ticket stubs.
