Patty Schnyder Brings a New Outlook and a New Family on Tour

There were many differences from the last time Patty Schnyder played at the United States Open, in 2010, and her first match back at the tournament on Wednesday.

There were new courts, new rules and a roof atop Arthur Ashe Stadium.

But in the moments immediately after Schnyder, 38, won her first match in the qualifying tournament on Wednesday, one stood out.

Seven years ago, after a third-round loss to Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, Schnyder slumped off the court alone, already growing weary of tennis and just months away from retiring.

But on Wednesday, after a victory over another Belgian, Ysaline Bonaventure, Schnyder sat in her chair and raised both arms as her 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Kim, scampered across the court toward her mother.
