No. 2-seed Andy Murray upset by Kei Nishikori in U.S. Open quarterfinals

Fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori upset No. 2 Andy Murray in the U.S. Open quarterfinals on Wednesday, winning 1-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 in nearly four hours to advance to the second Grand Slam semifinal of his career.

Murray, who had won 11 of his last 12 five-set matches, was coming off a commanding straight-sets win over No. 22-seed Grigor Dimitrov, which followed wins over Paolo Lorenzi, Marcel Granollers and Lukas Rosol. He had defeated Nishikori in seven of eight meetings, including in the Olympic semifinals this summer, where he went on to win gold.

Nishikori awaits the winner of Wednesday night's quarterfinal match between Juan Martin del Potro and third-seeded Stan Wawrinka.
