Naomi Osaka lost to a player outside the Top 50 for the first time this season as world No.76 Jil Teichmann of Switzerland upset her in the third round of the Western & Southern Open, 3-6 6-3 6-3.
The 24-year-old Teichmann had dropped a total of just seven games and had her serve broken just once in her victories over Sorana Cirstea and Bernarda Pera in the first two rounds. Against Osaka, the Swiss wildcard made a slow start, but picked up the momentum in the second set.
Playing her first WTA tournament since withdrawing from Roland Garros in May, Osaka sprayed balls all over the court and made 41 unforced errors to 17 winners, as Teichmann moved well, changed directions and height, used spins and slices to force the second seed into lengthy rallies.
