Murray through but Watson out in Rome

Andy Murray progressed to the third round of the Italian Open with a 6-3 6-3 win over Kazakh qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin.

The British number one, who received a bye in the first round, will face the winner of Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut and Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.

Heather Watson was beaten 6-4 6-2 by Czech Barbora Strycova in Rome.

The British number two, 23, won the opening four games but lost 12 of the next 14 against the world number 37.

Later on Wednesday, British number one Johanna Konta takes on seventh-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci.

"It's tough to take," said Watson, ranked 55th in the world.
