Garbine Muguruza won her Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open opener by defeating 50th-ranked Lesia Tsurenko 6-4 6-4 in the second round, fresh off her semifinal showing at Tokyo, which was her first event since becoming world No.1.
Cruising through the first set, Muguruza took a medical timeout after the seventh game, when Tsurenko approached her from 1-4 to 3-4. After having her left thigh taped, Muguruza continued to slide through the match, earning a crucial break in the third game of the second set, which Tsurenko never recovered from, although she did save a match point, forcing Muguruza to serve out the contest and seal it on her third match point.
