Johnson, Janowicz Advance at Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Steve Johnson and 2014 finalist Jerzy Janowicz of Poland won second-round matches at the Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday.

Johnson, one of three Americans left in the final tuneup before next week's U.S. Open, beat Australia's Sam Groth 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

"I thought it was great to get a win on my first day out here," said the 13th-seeded Johnson, who had a first-round bye. "I was just trying to take care of business and get ready for New York."

Meanwhile, Janowicz needed just less than 71 minutes to defeat defending champion Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2.
