Fabio Fognini Ejected From U.S. Open Over Vulgar Insults Directed at Umpire

Fabio Fognini was kicked out of the United States Open on Saturday for directing vulgar insults at the chair umpire during his first-round loss in the singles competition, and he could be permanently barred from all Grand Slam events.

Fognini was expelled from the doubles competition, where he and Simone Bolelli, a fellow Italian, had advanced to the third round.

If the Grand Slam Board determines that Fognini committed a “major offense,” he also could be fined up to $250,000 for violating the code of conduct.
