Maria Sharapova fell in the first round to Monica Niculescu, 4-6 6-4 6-3, Dominika Cibulkova defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(8) 6-4, and Agnieszka Radwanska needed as many as ten match points to finish off Mona Barthel 3-6 6-3 7-5.
