OTTAWA — Britain advanced to a Davis Cup quarterfinal matchup against France in odd fashion on Sunday after the deciding singles match ended when Denis Shapovalov of Canada hit the umpire in the face with a ball.
Shapovalov, a 17-year-old Israeli-born Canadian, was defaulted as a result, handing Britain’s Kyle Edmund a 6-3, 6-4, 2-1 victory after 78 minutes. That gave Britain a 3-2 victory in the first-round matchup in Ottawa.
