WIMBLEDON, England — This year, nearly half a million people will attend the tennis matches at Wimbledon, and an estimated 1.2 billion will watch the proceedings on televisions, tablets, computers and smartphones. But while all eyes are on the action, behind the swish of the rackets, the popping of champagne corks and the ripples of applause that characterize the Wimbledon experience, a well-oiled operation swings into action: the small army of stewards, officials, attendants and other workers who ensure that the tournament runs smoothly.

As many as 39,000 spectators at a time crowd into the All England Club for Wimbledon, the largest annual sports catering operation in Europe.
