Alexander Zverev Rises to No. 7 While Playing ‘Best Tennis of My Life’

MONTREAL — In a men’s tennis season dominated by the ageless veterans Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the Rogers Cup in Montreal last week served as a sort of coming out party for the next generation of tennis stars.

The unheralded Canadian Denis Shapovalov, 18, rose from tournament wild card to semifinalist, defeating the veteran Grand Slam champions Nadal and Juan Martín del Potro along the way.

Then on Sunday, Alexander Zverev, 20, of Germany, took the title, ending Federer’s 16-match winning streak, 6-3, 6-4.

It was the second title in two weeks for Zverev, who also won at the Citi Open in Washington this month.
