MELBOURNE, Australia — Elise Tamaela did not expect to be back in tennis. And whenever her current job coaching the Serbian player Aleksandra Krunic ends, she does not plan to pursue another one.
“This is not my world,” Tamaela said.
Her previous stint in tennis had come to a sudden, violent end in the summer of 2011, when another player’s father knocked her unconscious.
Before that, Tamaela’s tennis journey was more typical. The daughter of a truck driver and shoe saleswoman, Tamaela started out by hitting against a wall at age 6 in her small hometown, Culemborg, in the central Netherlands.
