On Friday, Venus and Serena Williams will meet for the 30th time in their professional tennis careers. Serena has won 17 of those matches, but Venus won the last one, in March in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., Serena’s first tournament after her maternity leave.
Their third-round match at the United States Open on Friday is their 16th meeting at a Grand Slam tournament. It will come in the earliest round since 17-year-old Venus defeated 16-year-old Serena in the second round of the 1998 Australian Open.
