Tennessee Football Coaching Rumors: Why Dan Mullen Won't Take the Job

Just a few days ago Derrick Dooley was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteer football program. Immediately rumors have started to swirl as to who will be his successor in Knoxville. But we will tell you for sure just one person who will not take Dooley's former job at Tennessee, Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen.

Much of the Tennessee brass has suggested that Mullen would be a great fit for the Vols. While this might be completely tue, look at it from his perspective. Is this really an upgrade from the job that he currently has? In his time at Mississippi State, Mullen has gone 29-21 and has taken the Bulldogs two of three years and will most take them to a bowl game this year (Bowl to be announced).

So from his perspective a job in Knoxville, in which he would have to take arguably the worst program in the conference ,and rebuild it to compete withe already competent program he currently has just does not make a whole lot of sense.  If I am Dan Mullen this seems like a demotion to me. I would be perfectly happy with the job I have at a solid SEC program.

If you are Tennessee Vol hoping that Mullen would be the next best thing to come to Knoxville, think again. No matter how badly you want him, Mullen will remain in his job a Miss State until a stronger program comes knocking for his services.
