'This man is a genius': How TCU climbed back into Big 12's elite with Gary Patterson's defensive mind

FORT WORTH -- West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen surrendered offensive play-calling duties this year and someone wondered if he might have bounced the idea off TCU's Gary Patterson.

"He wouldn't ask me about offense," Patterson said Tuesday. "He might ask about defense."

Actually, a whole lot of people might want to pick Patterson's mind about defense. It's been his calling card going on 17 years as TCU's head coach. After the defense played a key role in TCU's upset at Oklahoma State, Patterson suggested that an experienced secondary allows him to play chess. For now, he's back at grandmaster status after some 2016 struggles.
