In the wake of Harvey, here's how Division I schools like A&M can give relief money to its athletes

Days before Hurricane Harvey smashed into the Coastal Bend and flooded the entire city of Houston, Texas A&M's football team knew it didn't have to deal with the storm alone.

In a meeting with the athletic department's compliance officials, the team learned effects by Harvey on the players' families -- flooded homes, lost clothing, lack of food, etc. -- could be partially offset by the university.

Because of A&M's Student Assistance Fund (SAF), a resource available to each Division I-member of the NCAA, athletes can receive financial aid for households back home that are struggling to deal with Harvey's effects.
