The ultimate award for DeSoto senior quarterback Shawn Robinson would be the school's first state championship.
However, before the TCU verbal commit battles Cibolo Steele for that prize Saturday at AT&T Stadium, Robinson has gained statewide recognition from Gatorade as the company's 2016-17 football player of the year. This qualified him to win the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year Award announced later this month. The last Texas player to win that honor was former Allen quarterback Kyler Murray.
In addition to Murray, Robinson joins former Southlake Carroll quarterback Kenny Hill, Aledo running back Johnathan Gray and Denton Ryan's Scotty Young as the award's recipients.
