PORT CHARLOTTE – If everything breaks right for Joey Wendle over the next 15 days, he will make his first opening day roster four weeks before he turns 28.
A bit late by some standards, but nothing new for Wendle, who has always been a bit of a late bloomer.
Lightly recruited in high school. Not scouted in college until the summer before his senior year. Three years at Triple A with a pair of callups to the A's mixed in.
Even his Dec. 11 trade to the Rays went well under the radar, given it came a few hours after the Yankees picked up Giancarlo Stanton in the blockbuster trade with the Marlins.
