The Tigers added another potential center-field option Wednesday, acquiring outfielder Mikie Mahtook from the Rays for a player to be named or cash.
Outfielder Anthony Gose was designated for assignment to create room for Mahtook on Detroit's 40-man roster, which remains full.
Mahtook, 27, hit .195/.231/.292 in 65 games for the Rays last season. The right-handed hitter also batted .314/.393/432 with one homer in 31 games at three Minor League levels and is expected to compete for time in center field with JaCoby Jones and Tyler Collins.
