St. Pete leaders want county to save tax money for possible new Rays stadium

ST. PETERSBURG — City Council members are hoping to protect the tax money source that potentially could be used to build a new baseball stadium while they continue to negotiate with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The council agreed Thursday to ask the city’s legal staff to draft a resolution that would ask the Pinellas County Commission and the county’s Tourist Development Council to set aside about $6 million a year in tourist tax money.

That money has been used to help settle the bonds that built Tropicana Field. Those bonds were paid off in September, making that money available for other uses.
