Rays trade for a reliever ... to help in the future

BALTIMORE – The Rays made a trade for a relief pitcher on Saturday.

Not one with experience who can jump in to rescue their bullpen right now, however. Rather, they see Peter Fairbanks as an impact reliever in the future, sending him to Triple-A for now while raving about his upside.

The Rays got Fairbanks, 25, from Texas for Nick Solak, one of several promising middle infielders they had stockpiled in the minors.

Fairbanks returned to action this season after second Tommy John surgery and made his big-league debut in June, pitching in eight games (one against the Rays) while compiling an 0-2, 9.
