PORT CHARLOTTE – First baseman James Loney said he was told this afternoon by manager Kevin Cash and president of baseball operations Matt Silverman that he will not make the Opening Day roster.
There is no confirmation from the club, because Loney could should one of the players slated to play first base this year is injured during the final two days of spring training.
Loney, who will make $8 million this year, because the odd-man out when the Rays acquired Logan Morrison and Steve Pearce during the offseason.
“I loved my time here, loved the organization after they gave me a chance after 2012, but at the end of the day, you want to play in the big leagues,” Loney said.
