Rays Notes: MLB rules remain a work in progress

PORT CHARLOTTE — Major League Baseball will tweak the pace of play rules installed last season and could, within two weeks, issue rules governing how a runner can slide into second base in an attempt to break up a double play.

But the biggest issue caused by replay, the one where a player is ruled out after barely taking his foot off the bag because the fielder was still touching him with his glove, is not going away.

“That drives most of the clubs nuts, because in the spirit of it, it sort of negates a good play where a guy makes a (heck) of a slide and all of a sudden he’s off this much and he’s tagged,” Joe Torre, MLB’s chief baseball officer, said Wednesday morning after meeting with Rays manager Kevin Cash.
