Rays Notes: Interference call ends rally hopes

ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays’ last chance Saturday against the Orioles in what was a 2-1 loss turned on a call by home plate umpire Dale Scott, who ruled DH Evan Longoria interfered with Orioles C Matt Wieters while Wieters threw to second base on PR Mikie Mahtook’s stolen base attempt in the eighth inning.

Longoria was called out, and Mahtook was sent back to first base, where he would be caught stealing to end the inning.

Longoria hit Wieters on the hip with his backswing, but that wasn’t why Scott ruled interference.

“I see the confusion, I understand the confusion.
