ST. PETERSBURG — RHP Chris Archer broke out his change-up in a big way Monday against the Orioles, throwing the pitch more times than he had in any previous start as he won for the first time since Aug. 31.
Archer threw 93 pitches during his 62⁄3 innings, 20 of which were change-ups. He used the pitch for strike three on four of his first five strikeouts.
“Every year we talk in spring training about utilizing that pitch more, because it is good,” Archer said. “Just at times you don’t want to go with your third-best option.
