Rays Notes: Casali still working to return by Sunday

ST. PETERSBURG — C Curt Casali (strained left hamstring) is still holding out hope that he can play this season even if that means a pinch-hit appearance in Sunday’s season finale for the peace of mind of finishing the season on the active roster.

“He’s itching, man,” manager Kevin Cash said. “He is grinding out. He’s trying to get there.”

If there is still a chance of re-injuring the hamstring, Casali will remain on the DL.

“I do not want to be hindered in any way going into the offseason,” Casali said.

Cash said this is a big offseason for Casali, one in which he could emerge as one of the team’s two catchers when the Rays open the 2016 season.
