Rays lose Goeddel in Rule 5 draft

The Rays lost Tyler Goeddel, the 41st pick in the 2011 baseball amateur draft, to the Phillies in Thursday’s Rule 5 draft that concluded the winter meetings in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Phillies had the first overall pick of players not on a team’s 40-man roster. Goeddel batted .279 with 12 home runs and 72 RBIs last season at Double-A Montgomery.

The Rays also lost outfielder Joey Rickard, who was selected by the Orioles. Rickard, a ninth-round pick in 2012, hit a combined .321 for three different Rays affiliates last season. He had 23 stolen bases and a .
