Rays fall short against Yankees again in opener, 6-2

NEW YORK — As long as the Rays waited to finally get back on the field Thursday afternoon for the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, they didn’t put on much of a show.

A rough outing by starter Yonny Chirinos, some sloppy defense and a lack of hitting led to yet another loss to the Yankees, this one 6-2.

The teams have now played 16 games this season, and the Yankees have won 11, outscoring the Rays 90-49. The difference is especially stark in the Bronx, where the Yankees have won seven of nine.

The lopsided season series is a big reason the Yankees are seven games ahead of the 56-42 Rays in the AL East going into the second game of the doubleheader.
