ST. PETERSBURG — RHP Brad Boxberger (abdominal surgery) traveled to Philadelphia on Monday for a checkup with the surgeon and was cleared to begin baseball activities.

Boxberger, who threw his first bullpen on Saturday, still expects to return by mid-May.

“We expect a lot of big things when he is back,” Cash said.

RHP Alex Cobb and RHP Chase Whitley continued their comebacks from Tommy John surgery by throwing 25 fastballs during another bullpen session.

Cobb said he has progressed to throwing his changeup while playing catch. It won’t be until next month when he incorporates those into his bullpen.
