ST. PETERSBURG – A pair of unofficial delays in the eighth inning featured heated exchanges between umpires and managers. Red Sox manager Alex Cora argued that Rays manager Kevin Cash made illegal substitutions.
The umpiring crew, led by Angel Hernandez, determined that the Rays did not violate any rules with their substitutions in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game.
“(Cora) wanted to know what was going on, so we told him it didn’t alter the outcome of anything that had happened so far,” Hernandez said.
The decision from Hernandez left Red Sox manager Alex Cora rattled.
