Jared Sandberg declines Rays coaching offer, set to join Mariners instead

Earlier today the Rays filled the coaching vacancy left by new Blue Jays manger Charlie Montoyo by hiring Astros Triple-A coach Rodney Linares to be the new Third Base coach.

The other coaching vacancy has been Major League Field Coordinator, which was occupied by new Twins manager Rocco Baldelli. The Rays offered that job to Triple-A manager Jared Sandberg, a former Devil Rays player in his career and an inaugural draft pick from 1996, but he has declined.

Sandberg will instead accept a Field Coordinator coaching role for the Seattle Mariners, his hometown club, a move that allows his family to live in their winter home full time.
