Security around the Tampa Bay Rays’ dugout will be increased in the wake of Saturday’s incident in Bradenton, where a man ran onto the field at McKechnie Field and threw a container of beer in the dugout, Rays manager Kevin Cash said Sunday.
The man was identified by Bradenton police as Heliodoro J. Guttierrez. He turns 68 on Friday. Guttierrez, who is of Cuban descent, seemed to oppose the Rays’ trip to Cuba last week.
“You really didn’t know what his intentions were,” Lt. John Affolter of the Bradenton Police Department told the Bradenton Herald. “We are just fortunate he didn’t have a weapon.
