Coburn an unlikely offensive hero for Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning

TAMPA — Braydon Coburn could have fibbed and said he was trying to pick a corner, but nobody would have believed him — including his appreciative teammates.

With one goal in 43 games during the regular season, the Lightning’s veteran defenseman has never been noted for his offensive prowess. But Coburn picked a dynamic time for his first goal in a Tampa Bay uniform, one-timing Ryan Callahan’s feed past rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek at 3:58 of the third period.

Coburn’s first playoff goal since 2011 not only broke a scoreless deadlock in Game 7, it also relaxed a tight home team the rest of the way in a 2-0 triumph against Detroit that advanced Tampa Bay into the Eastern Conference semifinals against Montreal.
