MONTREAL — Controversy surrounded the Lightning within minutes of Nikita Kucherov’s winning goal in the second overtime of Game 1 on Friday.
In postgame comments, Montreal head coach Michel Therrien expressed frustration with a missed offside call on Valtteri Filppula, which occurred 12 seconds before Filppula took the puck away from Greg Pateryn along the wall and fed Kucherov in the slot.
But the Lightning, which had a goal negated in Game 3 last season along with a missed offside call on what would have been a Steven Stamkos breakaway, plus a potential goal in the first overtime wiped out on Friday, weren’t exactly in a sympathetic mood a day later.
