PALM HARBOR — An ill wind blew all morning for the top-ranked player in the world.
A steady, 15 mph southeast breeze bedeviled Jordan Spieth, who opened defense of his Valspar championship with a 5-over-par 76 that featured only one birdie.
“It was a very tough day,’’ said Spieth, who bogeyed four of his first five holes after starting at No. 10. “I just caught the wrong gusts. We guessed incorrectly.’’
Spieth, who breezed to an eight-shot victory at Maui in his first PGA event of 2016, landed his tee shot on only seven of 13 fairways.
