Syracuse Announces Jim Boeheim Will Retire In Three Years

Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim will retire in three years as part of an agreement between university officials and the Hall of Fame coach, the school announced today.

This comes in the wake of the NCAA's penalties against the Syracuse basketball program, and the announcement that athletic director Daryl Gross has been fired.

Long-time assistant Mike Hopkins, a former Syracuse player who has been on Boeheim's staff since 1996, has been designated as the program's head coach-in-waiting and will take over when Boehiem retires.

Boeheim will be forced to sit out the first nine ACC games next year as part of the NCAA penalties, and had 108 of his coaching wins vacated.

He played at Syracuse from 1962-1966, and then took over as head coach of the Orange in 1976. Boeheim has led the program to four Final Fours and won one national championship in 2003.
